Our sand and loam mixtures are specially prepared to create the perfect medium for ants. The sand and loam is 100% natural and provides the perfect balance of water retension and structural strength for ants to build their nests.

When setting up your ant habitat its best to put a layer of clay granules below the sand loam mixture. This not only creates a reservoir under the nest to help with humidity but also prevents the ants being over watered and stops the development of any mould or stagnant water. You can also add a scattering of gravel or clay granules to the surface of the sand loam mixture to create a more natural nesting site.

Sand and loam should always be dampened before adding any ants to make sure it holds together. Water can be added slowly and gradually using a pipette.
