Clay granules are used in ant habitats to provide a layer of drainage below the sand loam mixture in which the ants nest.

Clay granules have many useful properties:

– They prevent the sand loam in which the ants are nesting from being over watered by acting as drainage.

– The granules create a space below the sand loam which acts as a water reservoir helping with the humidity in the nest.

– Prevents mould and the development of stagnant water.
